Next version of MS Office?

N

Norman Savigar

Is there a new version of MS Office in the pipeline? I have Office 97
and am considering an upgrade to 2003 for my home PC (I already have it
on my company laptop) but wouldn't want to jump too early?

Apparently Microsoft Office 2007 is coming out early next year. And it's a
pretty big update with the "Ribbon" and Live Preview. So you might hold off
if you can. They are getting ready to initiate Beta phase 2 on MS Office 07.

Thanks - just viewed the preview and will wait

You've seen everyone else's responses now I'm going to give you food for
thought. Office 2003 will allow Office 97 as a qualifying product. There's
no guarantee that Office 2007 will.

My suggestion is to get Office 2003 now. But that's just my opinion..for
whatever it's worth.

now I'm going to give you food for thought.

Another possible mind snack: the changes that are part of Office 2007 are
significant, and 1st releases of MS software with big changes have a history
of being a bit on the buggy side. The bugs eventually get worked out in
Service Releases, but that can take a while....

Office 2003 has already been through that "shake-down" phase.

Amen to that! And that is the prime reason I'm not jumping on the Office
2007 bandwagon as soon as it's released. The last thing I need to combine
learning the new user interface and fight with bugs all at the same time.

I might also point out that when Office 2007 is released places such as
Amazon.com, Egghead, etc. might very well offer significent reductions
in price for existing stocks of Office 2003.

I don't know if that will be an important factor in deciding which
version to get but it is something to consider.

OK, OK, I should have said that at this point Office 2003 (including Service
Releases) is as finished a product as it is likely to get.

Sheesh, everybody's a comedian. :)

I would wait until XMAS 2006 to buy Office 2003 because Microsoft always
give you the next version free if you have just bought the old version!
This is my experience in the UK!!

Well I will tell you when it is out. The offer for Office 2007 is not
yet out and it is too early to predict anything.

I got Office 2003 long time ago and it was a limited time offer at that
time. You have to wait until XMAS this year for the next offer - I am
afraid!!. I said in my previous message to wait until Xmas this year.

It is normal practice for Microsoft to offer this otherwise people would
stop buying until the next version is out and this isn't good for
business. As I said, this normally happens in the UK and so you may not
have heard of this or have never seen such offers. This is a genuine MS
offer - not some pirate websites.

It is called a "Technology Guarantee" and has existed with all versions of
Office since at least Office 2000. Buy the current version of Office and,
if the next version is released within 30 days (normal interval) you get the
next version for free since you just bought "outdated" software.

From the last offering:

And since there's no set date for the release of Office 2007, hold your
money.

Thanks Milly, This is what I meant but I didn't know the exact name.
It is some time since we had a new product.

What about hardware? Will Office 2007 run on an "older" system, or
will the new version require so much speed and ram and power (Hertz)
that we'll need to get new computers?

Hi Fishy,

The specifications for the release version haven't been finalized, but these are the minimum system requirements for the 2007 Office
System.
