Mary!

I am not the OP and it is not a symbol that I had ever seen
before but 20a6 really works! How did you find this out since it
does not appear with the Insert...Symbol command? Using Office
Professional Word, you can select 20a6 under Unicode hex but
nothing happens, unlike your ALT-X prescription :)

Bemused!

Hi James,

Using Insert | Symbol | Font choose MS Mincho > Subset: Currency Symbols
This particular symbol is 2nd row 7 from left

Thanks Paul!

I get it! I see that the Naira symbol is only available in a
limited number of fonts but if you enter the hex Unicode value
in the text followed by ALT-X one of these fonts will be
selected for it. A quick and doubtless incomplete survey
indicates that Arial will use MS Gothic and Times New Roman,
Courier, Garamond produce it in MS Mincho, which seems the
default font in several others. Lucida Sans Unicode, MS Sans
Serif, Tahoma include the Naira.

As I've said before, you live and learn, but I repeat the
question, how did you ever find out? :)

You could create the symbol in a Word document, copy it to
the clipboard, and then paste it into Excel.

Why the ALT-X method will not work in Excel is something for the
great brains at Microsoft to explain but Insert Symbol, set to
Unicode Hex will work if the font used is one that contains the
Naira, These include Tahoma, MS Mincho, Lucida Sans Unicode and
MS Sans Serif. There may be others and I will leave you to try
them out in Outlook.

I got interested and tried to see if Insert Symbol would work in
Outlook as provided in Office XP. I don't use Outlook much but,
AFAIK, Insert Symbol is not available but there *is* a way via
the CharacterMap program. You *can* put a shortcut for Character
Map on your desktop but don't these incompatibilities among
programs allegedly forming a Suite drive you nuts? I suppose the
problem is that they are not based on a decent system like Unix
:)

What do you have set for your currency symbol in your Regional
Settings in your Control Panel?

I can copy the symbol from Word and paste it in the Currency format
combo box and it will be used for the Currency format in Excel.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.
