No animation of gif file in PowerPoint 97?

I have try to add gif file in slide, when I play the slide, I can't see the
animation effect in PowerPoint 97. but I can see it in PowerPoint XP.
Can anyone help me. Thanks!

Animation of GIF files was new in PowerPoint 2000. '97 does not support the
animation of GIF files. They will appear as still images of the first frame
of the GIF.

This was one of the major reasons to upgrade at the time.
