No Contacts from New Message To: field

Turner Morgan

My thanks to the two MVPs who assisted with the problem I posted yesterday.

Here's another one. I just this evening tried to send a new email and when
I clicked on the To: button to get the address out of my Contacts list, I
got an error message telling me the Contacts list was not available, had
been moved or I did not have permissions.

I have used the "fix" of opening the Tools menu, Email Accounts. . . and
adding a contacts list. Yes, I did exit and restart Outlook 2003, to no
avail. I should point out that this is a new installation of Office 2003 on
a fresh install of XP Pro and the Contacts list was imported from the
previous system (Outlook XP on XP Home).

Anyway, is there some way I can get these contacts to be recognized by the
current Outlook installation? I did leave a small note to the Outlook Help
folks saying essentially the same thing except that I quoted the error
dialog verbatim since I had it right there.

Thanks again for the help yesterday,

Turner

Explain more thoroughly just what you tried.
The solution to which you seem to be referring works. Note that in some
instances you may actually have to remove the Outlook Address Book
completely from your Profile, close Outlook, and then re-add it before you
can get it to work.

I use outlook 2003 and I am having the same problem. My contacts are
alive and well when I go directly to them. I can even use them to send
an email if I am in the Contacts section, but when I click on the "TO"
button while in the outlook email section it gives me an error telling
me the Contacts list was not available, had been moved or I did not have
permissions.

Outlook 2003 then gives me a chance to select from a long list of
contacts. None of the selections in the contacts list have my
information. I assume that the only thing wrong is that my outlook
email program does not know where my valid contacts list is located.

If you get an answer please share it with me. My correct return email
address is listed with this message. I plan to duplicate my question in
another post to see if anyone will answer it. This really bugs me.

Try removing the Outlook Address Book completely, restarting Outlook, then
adding it back in.

How do you remove an address book? No options are given with a right
click! Also do people use the term "Address Book" interchangably with
"Contacts". My issue is with contacts.

One last thing. Elsewhere on this site I received some helpfull advice
on this from MVP Jocelyn Fiorello. If you get a chance to look at her
approach and comment it would be great.

Tools | Email Accounts > View or change existing directories or address
books. The Outlook Address Book displays the electronic addresses in your
Contacts folder. The symptoms you described are those of an Outlook Address
Book that can't find its Contacts folder. When it reaches that state, it's
usually faster and more efficient to remove it and add it back in, than to
try to fix it.
