No Header/Foot White Space in Print Layout View in Word 2003

Problem: a new document displays without the header or
footer white space in Print Layout.
Immediate solution is to View, Header and Footer, then
close Header and Footer window. Document now displays
with white space for header and footer
However, saving and closing the new document does not
correct the display error on subsequent new documents.
Any fixes?

Tools => Options => View (tab)

Check the box to view White space between pages.

Yes, thanks very much. Got the same sound advice from

My only remaining question is, why would anyone NOT want
the white space to show in Print Layout view?

Thanks again for your help.

This view gives you the best of both worlds: the WYSIWYGness of Print Layout
view but the efficiency of Normal view. When you're entering text and not
actually working with the header/footer, you just want to be able to see
continuous text (which is why I work in Normal view most of the time). But
if you're having to deal with complex page layout issues that can't be
displayed in Normal view, then you need Print Layout view.
