No line numbering Word 2000

I usually number the lines in documents I am working on, using the Page Setup
option on the left of the toolbar. This always works, apart from today! I
just cannot get the line numbers to appear in a particular document. I have
made sure that the line numbers are not 'repressed', and am now at a loss
what to do. Could it be something to do with the document having been
converted from a different format?

If the text is in table cells or text boxes, it won't be numbered by Word.
