No menu toolbar or status bar after mailmerge

I am currently using a template with an {ask} field. This works as expected
except for the fact that the all of the menus, toolbars etc disappear when
the document is opened. If I remove the {ask} field then open the document
again, the toolbars and menus reappear! Help!!
