No new instance (in a seperate window) of word 2003 when opening

My Word 2003 does not open a new instance (window) when
creating or loading a seperate document. All docs appear
within the same window, managable through the -Window-
menu, but not able to alt-tab between documents.

Is there a setting in the registry, or some command line
switch that could have been changed to create this
situation?

I can use a command line switch (/w) to open a new
instance, and from then on the new docs do create
seperate windows. But not from the Word shortcuts native
to the original Office installation

How did i screw this up?

I guess you skipped WordXP en route to Word 2003? It isn't a new instance of
Word. What you are seeing Single Document Interface versus Multiple Document
Interface. See http://word.mvps.org/faqs/customization/SDIMDI.htm for more
information.

Thanks for the reply but...

The simple and quick answer to my question was found on
the web link you provided

Tools + Options + View, and selecting or de-selecting
the "Windows in Taskbar" option. This gave me back
the 'alt-tab between documents' capability

Your suggestion that I did not understand SDI and
the "not really a seperate instance" concept was not very
helpful (and not true). If showing people like me how
much more knowledegable you are is what motivates you to
offer help, than I am happy to provide you that
opportunity. It was a small price to pay for the access
to free help.

Your web link did have the simple answer though.
