no new mail tray icon after updates installed

I've read thru all the posts on how to activate the new mail tray icon. I've always had mine set up to show the envelope but it suddenly stopped working. After checking the settings, it occured to me that I had downloaded several MS suggested updates around the same time this happened.
Does anyone know if MS has a subsequent update that resets this function?
