No Notification Icon In System Tray

OS: xp pro
Outlook Version: 2002 with SP-2

I have configured my email settings in outlook to place the envelope icon in the system tray and to play a sound (notify.wav) but it never appears and it doesnt play the sound when i receive an email. It does however show the icon and play the sound when i use outlook express. I have checked my volume settings and have pretty much exhausted my options. All suggestions are appreciated.
