"No objects need to be updated"

I am getting the message "No objects need to be updated" even though I am
changing some field properties of an object that has been placed in a form.
For example, I am:

-Changing the column width of a lookup value list.
-The change in width shows in the Field Properites in the table design view.
-I receive the update objects icon and I select "yes".
-I then receive the message "No objects need to be updated" when that is
untrue.

I've never had this happen before, so I'm unclear about how to troubleshoot
from this point. Any suggestions?
