no option for keyboard shortcuts to insert symbols in office 2003

The symbols box in my office 2003 does not include any way to assign a
keyboard shortcut to insert symbols just by typing the shortcut.

Are you saying that in the Insert/Symbol dialog box you do not see a
"Shortcut Key" button near the bottom?

Correct, there is not a shortcut key button.

For Publisher, you may need to use the Alt + character code instead of
assigning your own shortcut. For example hold Alt and type the
character code you see in the dialog box using the 10 key pad.

You could potentially use an AutoCorrect entry for it instead of a
shortcut - just type the Alt + character code in the with text box.

One of the Publisher experts may know of an alternative method so you
may want to check for additional replies to this thread.

I use the character map for my symbols so I have no shortcuts set up. Nor do
I use them for anything else - the ones built into Pub fulfill my needs. I
did a search for "shortcut key" in the Help file and there was a long
description for creating them. Maybe you can't set one up for that specific
command? I would think you could do something with a macro but we won't even
begin to talk about how little I know about VBA - that's Ed Bennett's forte.

I'm using charachter map and auto correct. I apreciate all the help.
Shortcut keys are easier for Publishers information.
