Hey!

I hope I can get some help here. Since the update (12.1.3) the proofreading (German or any other language) does not work anymore. I completely reinstalled Office 2008 and the proofreading worked fine till I updated to the mentioned version.

Thanks in advance!

We've not heard of this particular issue before.

Are there any error messages?

Which language is the text in? (Go to Tools>Language>Set language and see
which language is highlighted when you are in the text...)

Also make sure the "Do not check spelling or grammar" button is NOT turned
on :)

Hope this helps

Text is in German, but could also be in English. It does not matter.

Tools->Language->German (Default)
Custom Dictionary is Custom Dictionary and the selected language is German

Unchecked: hide spelling errors in this document, sugest from main dictionary only, show grammatical errors in Notebook Layout View, hide grammatical errors in this document, show readability statistics

I updated to 12.1.4 and the issue is the same.

I can see in the bottom bar that word is checking, but it does not find any mistakes, there is always a green check mark.

Good: That means that the spell-checker is running.

Go to Word>Preferences>Spelling and grammar and click the "Check Document"
button.

That resets all of the "ignored" errors. It may be that at some time all
the errors in the document have been "ignored".

I would also set your custom dictionary language to "None". Otherwise,
words will be read from or added to the dictionary only if the document text
being checked is marked as German. You would need to create and maintain
several more dictionaries, one for each flavour of English you get.

Cheers

Clicked already on Check Document and there is no change in new or "old" documents.

Custom Dictionary is now set to none.

As I said the problem appeared after installing the update (12.1.3) and I did not change anything.

Well, I hope someone else has a good answer, because I am out of ideas.

If nobody else chimes in, we will have to run Remove Office and do the full
re-installation catastrophe.

Sorry...

No problem. I already did a complete new install before opening this thread, but I guess it could be another possibility to fix the issue. I will keep waiting for other ideas first.

Yeah: The sequence is critical: A new install will not change anything
that is already on the disk, so unless you run Remove Office first,
re-install changes nothing.

Once you DO Remove and Reinstall, you must then apply all the updates,
because the version on the CD has no updates applied at all.

Wow... works now! Removed it with the "Office Remove" and manually removed everything in Preferences and Application Support and reinstalled.

Well done :)

We have had mixed reports of using AppZapper. Some people swear by it,
others say it leads to extra problems :)

Put me in the second category.

I also stay away from applications that are supposed to trim your
iinstallations by removing languages and PPC code, etc. That often leads
to nasty problems (like, not being able to isntall Office updates :-> ).
