no server on Port 80

Win XPPro with Frontpage 2002 - IIS is installed - was
helped with info to " extend the FP SE " but that option
is not listed under All Tasks ... have gone in and read
every newsgroup listing on topic I can find, but nothing
is helping me get a server up and running on my machine!
HELP :) and thanks for any you can give me. Stefan has
tried so hard to help - maybe someone else has a
suggestion too!

IIS admin and the www publishing service must both be started.

Did you also install the FP server extensions when you installed IIS? Did
you install the default FP2000 extensions that came with it?

can't be a silly question since I have no idea how to
turn on the service!! :) I installed IIS and it is listed
there with my Windows Components with a check beside it -
does that not mean it is turned on? Thanks!
-----Original Message-----
This may seem like a silly question...but did you turn
on the service? I know I don't keep mine running all the
time, so whenever I want to use it (rarely) I need to
Start it. Unfortunately, I'm not using XP yet, so I don't
know where the control panel is for the server.
Just a shot.

How do you "start" them? They are listed in my Windows
components as there - I tried going into it and did what
is called a "restart on ISS" after right clicking on my
local computer in the Administrative Tools - I see that I
could right click on the ISS and there is an option
called "Run As" -is this something I should do?
Did you also install the FP server extensions when you installed IIS? Did
you install the default FP2000 extensions that came with
it?

I guess I did as I installed everything that could be
clicked - I have since downloaded the Frontpage 2002
extentions to replace the 2000 that were the default, but
then since it isn't running I have no idea what will be
actually installed and guess if I get the server so it is
actually running I can do an install again of the right
extensions...??

Have you turned off and re-started your computer?

Did you select to install the FP extensions when installing IIS?

How are you trying to access the server from FP or your browser, http://localhost?

Try:

http://localhost in your browser

http://localhost in FP using File Menu | Open Web

If you still can connect, then uninstall IIS and the FP2002 extensions, reboot, then re-install IIS
with FP2000 extensions, once you can connect, then upgrade the extensions to FP2002.

OK I still cannot connect - I have uninstalled IIS and
the Frontpage 2002 extensions. Rebooted. Reinstalled the
IIS with Frontpage 2000 extentions and now the IIS is
shaded and the details list the world wide web as shaded
also. and can't connect - the error message is
"Server error: Error 2 opening registry
key "Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\ Web Server
Extensions\ Ports\ Port 80"

any ideas on where I go now?? Thanks so much for your
help!

Where are you seeing IIS as being shaded?

Open the IIS MMC, then select the root web for the machine, then right click, All Task.

Where are you seeing IIS as being shaded?

in Add\Remove Programs in the Windows Components Window
where those programs on machine are clicked - the IIS is
clicked but shaded and when you click on details, the
World Wide Web Service under subcomponents is also
clicked but shaded.
Open the IIS MMC, then select the root web for the
machine, then right click, All Task.

I do not think I know how to enter IIS MMC - (I entered
Performance and Maintenance...the Administrative
Tools ... then IIS ...then I can see my root web -name of
computer? - and when I can right click on my root web for
computer and get an ALL TASKS option the 2 choices are:
restart the program and backup or restore configuration.

Neither option has seemed to help my situation :(

I am unable to open the default web here anymore as it
says unable to find server now whereas before it was
opening fine in browser and through Frontpage but got the
error message when trying to publish.

I am sure it must be supremely frustrating to help folks
through this stuff but believe me I appreciate it!

The shading just means that not all of the options where selected by default. You should be ok with
the defaults.

Under Control Panel | Admin Tools | Internet Information Services:

Expand the folder under folder named for your computer, then expand Web Sites, and then right click
on Default Web Site. If the extensions are not applied, you will see an option to configure them.

Now from your browser or FP (File Menu | Open Web), you should be able to access the root web using
any of the following:

http://localhost
http://127.0.0.1
http://YourComputerName

OK now maybe we are getting to a major source of the
problem here as there is NO folder under the folder named
for my computer in this location. The website I have
created with Frontpage and brought back to my computer
(remember my computer crashed and everything had to be
reloaded)I downloaded from online at its location on the
server it was on - the web is located at
C:\inetpub\wwwroot\sabatellohomes
isn't this where I was supposed to save it? This is not
the location where Frontpage by default had put it when
first brought to my computer - that was in My Documents,
my webs etc.
AT this point I am sure there is something most basic I
am doing - BTW the site that I have on my computer was
originally created with Frontpage 98 ... but corrections
and additions were done many times after changing to
Frontpage 2002 with the 2000 extensions.

Does any of this shed any light on what is happening?
Thanks again for your interest in helping me and your
patience.

READ THIS FIRST AND IGNORE OTHER :)

OK now let me go back - I was able to find the default
Web Site under the name of the computer - under state it
says "running" and under IP address it says "unassigned"
and under Port it says "80" - there was no option to
configure the extensions so I can assume they are
applied. AND from the browser I can access the root web
using all of the options you gave me.

However when I open the web site in Frontpage and try to
publish the web it still gives the error message:

Server error : Error 2 opening registry
key "Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools|Web Server
Extensions\Ports\Port 80"

Once again thank you very much for all of your help in
this and your patience.

I am trying to publish it to:
http://www.sabatellocompanies.com
the site where it has been for several years (hosted by
interland) and I am positive that all passwords are
correct and the server extensions have been reloaded on
that site and their end says things are working properly
there.

??

T

Ok, so you have the local copy open in FP via File Menu | Open Web, and then you click on File Menu
| Publish web, then enter http://www.sabatellocompanies.com as the location, correct?

You need to contact your host as permissions are not set correctly for your account.

Crash,

I am not really following your train of thought here...

If you have a web server (IIS) installed on your local machine, then you really should always work
locally against the web server.

hmmm I must not understand your question or how it all
works - I need to be able to publish via Frontpage the
changes I make to the site and this is what is not
working .... yes some features I need to have ... ftp'ing
the changes is not an option.
but thanks for trying!!

When trying to convert sabatellohomes to a subweb I
receive the following error message:

Server error: Unable to create a disk-based web
at "C:Inetpub\wwwroot\sabatellohomes" because its parent
web would not be a disk-based web. Create the disk-based
web elsewhere, outside of your web server's document
hierarchy.

I am realizing that the site should not be the default
website for my computer but a folder under, but not sure
how to go about making this change or what the above
error message means.

:( Thanks again for your help!!

C:\inetpub\wwwroot

http://yourmachinename

either of the above will give you access to the content in:

Once you are able to access http://localhost in FP, you
would then create a folder called:

you would then right click on sabatellohomes and select
to convert it to a web (subweb).
