No sound on Win 2000

I have made up several PP presentations that have the music embedded in them
I have made these into PP shows and have put them on a CD. I tried this CD on
my laptop (as it has no connection to the slides or the music) and it played
all of the presentations and the music fine. I gave this to a friend for him
to enjoy but out of the 30 presentations only 2 of them play the music. I
have saved one of the ones that plays and one of the one that doesn't as web
pages on my desk top to see if there is any difference in the content of the
music. As I rip my tracks in the same way with the same bit rate in the same
place every time i did not thiink there would be. Any ideas? Thanks

Without knowing the type of music files that your using, PowerPoint version
makes it a little hard to tell what is happening. Background music on the
web is treated differently than in a regular type of presentation. Here are
a couple of places to look for answers.
Play sounds across multiple slides (A WAV runs through it)
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00047.htm

Sounds won't play across multiple slides on the web

Sorry Michael. The music I always use successfully is in Wave Audi file MPEG
layer 3 the problem is not with the music or the CD as I can play the PP
presentation from the CD on my laptop (not the PC that made the presentation
so the music is embedded) and I can transfer the folder from the CD to the
desktop on the laptop and play all OK from there. It is only when a friend
tries the same on his PC with Win2000 the the problems occur. I am not trying
to put it on the web. The only reason I saved as a web page was to see the
individual files in the presentation to see if the music files had any
obvious differences. They haven't. i hope this clarifies things so that you
can help me. The pages you suggest I am familiar with but as I have explained
my situation is different.
Thanks

How about trying the particular piece of music on your friends machine to
see if it plays outside of PowerPoint. the problem could be with his set up.

MP3s (MPEG Layer 3) are not embedded, Charlie. Only WAV files are embedded.
Possibly a small nit to pick, but it could be important. Hard to tell in
this case without knowing more.

Michael's suggestion to try the MP3s on your friend's computer outside of
PPT is a good one.

How did you insert the music into your presentations? How did you create
your CDs? Is the music saved on your CD along with the presentation file?
Assuming so, is the music all in one folder, or is the music specific to a
presentation included in the same folder the presentation is in? Or is
everything just loose on the CD with nothing in folders?

If the CD plays properly on other computers but not this particular one the
most likely suspect is that your friend does not have the required codec to
play it. Be aware there now are several MP3 codecs and you must have the
right one.

As an alternative to MP3 I'd suggesat giving PFCMedia a try as it will
automatically convert the music file into a standard format that can be
played on any Windows PC. You may download a free trial version from

Thanks gentlemen for your help. To answer Echo's questions. The music is a
..wav file it is embedded into each presentation (.pps shows). All of the
shows are in the same folder. I am assuming that the music is embedded in the
files because when I play each show on my laptop from the CD and the having
tranferred the folder onto the laptop from that folder direct. The laptop has
no other access to the music as it is on my desktop.I inserted the music from
the Insert/Movies and Sounds/Sound from File and browse to the music. I have
made a folder up with low grade ripped music of upto a meg so that I can
embed this into the shows and it works well. So the music is not in it's
original folder but the folder that all the presentation are in and it is
definely in there. The music files are not all over the place in the folder
but in the individual.pps folder. I have proved this but opening the show in
PP and sving as a web page and then opening the folder that contains all of
the slides and the music to see it there.
Ausitn's last suggestion to see if the music file will play independently of
the PP show is a good one and I think that is the way ahead. I think the
problem certainly lies on my friend's computer and I will investigate that
further.I will also check out the PFCMedia but it needs to be able to rip the
msuic file small enough to mail? i will also check the codec situation.
Thanks again

Yes, if you're using WAV files, then those could definitely be embedded.

Thanks for clarifying how you inserted the sounds and that you're copying
the folder to your computer to play the files. Since your laptop doesn't
seem to be connected by network to your desktop, it sounds as if it's a good
test. I'd definitely try the sound files outside of PPT on your friend's
system.
