No such interface supported

Even since setting Word as my email editor I get an
error "No such interface supported" when I run the "Check
Names" command. If I don't have Word as my email editor
it works fine.

There are also other situations where it says that it
cannot start Word is unavailable, not installed or is not
the same version as Outlook. In actual fact, I have the
same version of Word installed and it is running.

I first had the problem with Office XP. I tried the
following without success:
1. installing all the updates
2. repairing
3. re-installing Office XP (un-install then re-install)
4. un-install Office XP and install Office 2003.
