No web security available?

Steve Sprague

Currently I am trying to set permissions for a web but I am unable to do so.
When I go to the Tools menu, the Security section is grayed out. I have
many different webs and this feature doesn't appear to be available for any
of them. I have the full version of Front Page 2000 and I have tried
searching for this issue but to no avail.

Can anyone suggest what the problem might be?

I have never had to deal with permissions before, but I have a client that
is very concerned over security and I wanted to use this feature to ensure
that others that may access the web do not have the ability to change
information on it.

Thank you in advance.

Only available on the online web, and only if the host allows it. Open your
online web in FP to check. You may have to contact your host.

You have to be connected to your hosted web in order to set this properly
since permissions can't be published. Even connected to your web that is on
your web host's server you may not see this if they haven't made you an
administrator of the site (and even then they can disable this functionality
if they choose). If you're workign locally you won't see this available if
you're using disk-based webs, since FP isn't using a web server directly to
work with these webs. Also, if you're working against a local web server and
wondering why this option doesn't show, you have to be running IIS on
WinNT/2000/XP Pro and on an NTFS partition in order to see this.

You may also see if the web host for this particular client has special
settings or mechanisms in place for setting permissions.

Hope this helps,

Wow, thanks for the fast response!

I will check that here shortly and see what turns up.

Again, thank you so much.

Thanks for the info. I am indeed already configured on the server as the
Admin/Webmaster/Author etc. and my hosting service is on there as well, but
I can lock them out if I want to. Im not worried about them though.

Again, thank you for the info.
