No Word?

I ordered a Dell XPS ($3000) last year and it came without Microsoft Word. I
got Word Perfect - which bites - and isn't fully compatible with Word - which
is on my office computer. Anyway, I have trouble doing work from home
because of this and I really feel jipped. Maybe it's Dell's problem but
Windows XP (my operating system) really should have come with Word for the
price I paid.

Hi Eric,

I tend to agree that a machine of that price should come with good software
but this group is actually for the MS program "Access", which is the
Database manager you get as part of the MS Office suite. If you invested in
MS Office you'd get Access (the program), Word, Excel (the spreadsheet),
Outlook (the email program) and a number of other things depending on the
version. If you actually have a use for professional software the Office
suite represents good value. As for the OS I tend to disagree with you a
little. Word is fine if you are going to do a lot of documents, but many
users would never use it and including such things (you could argue this for
all the above mentioned) would add cost to my system for stuff I will never
use. I guess we'd all like stuff for nothing, but XP does give you a lot of
"Basic" versions of things.

I'm not sure where your comment should be posted for most effect, I do think
MS take notice but I doubt they have time to respond to individual queries.

You could try the group windowsxp.general (Have to look down the list or
better still setup Outlook Express - see below) to see if others share your
view.

Operating systems are one type of software.

Office productivity suites are a different type of software.

Your complaint is somewhat like complaining that you bought a car, and
it didn't come with a set of kitchen utensils.

Please not that Microsoft Access is a database program, part of the
Office Pro suite (which also includes Word, should you choose to buy
it). This newsgroup is for questions about Access, not for general
Office complaints.

well, i don't know about kitchen utensils, John - but i sure wish my car had
come with a washer/dryer. think how handy to do your laundry at the same
time you ran errands (or went out to dinner and a movie)! hmm, think GM
would give a listen? <g>

did you really spend $3000 without finding out exactly what you were going
to get for your money, before you spent it? wow.

Wow. $3000 for a computer and you didn't even know what software came
with it. Your best approach at this time is probably just to buy
yourself a copy of Word. The best price deal is to find Word included
in a copy of MS Works Suite, and just install Word.

BTW, the reason that Dell includes WordPerfect and not Word on that
