Just to give some context, when Groove Networks was aquired, Office 2007 was
already several cycles ahead of the game and we needed to catch up. there
needed to be some compramises made. While the Server products are 64 bit,
the client is not. Client on 64 bit machines is getting a very hard look for
future versions. Hang in there.
Hmm, "getting a hard look" in 2008, when Microsoft acquired Groove Networks
in early 2005, is not very reassuring. If it's only "getting a hard look"
now, would you expect that any sort of working release is at least a year
away?
In the mean time, I found a convoluted configuration that seems to work, I'm
not sure if others have already tried this:
1. Install VirtualPC and set up a virtual machine running a 32-bit OS (I
chose XP over Vista to minimize disk space; can use < 10GB virtual disk.)
2. Install Groove on the virtual machine.
3. Set up your Groove account and fetch your Groove workspaces.
4. Use Windows XP file sharing to share your Groove directory from the
virtual machine to the network.
5. On the real machine running Vista-x64, go to "Network" and access the
shared drive.
I'm able to run Excel, Word, and even QuickBooks in Vista-x64; when it saves
files, the changes get propagated out to other machines. QuickBooks seemed a
little slower than usual but that's just a feeling, I didn't do any
benchmarks.
I added VirtualPC to my Vista Startup folder, and added Groove 2007 to the
Windows XP Startup folder, so everything starts up in the background
automatically and I pretty much don't have to deal with the virtual machine
at all.
I've only been using this for a few hours, I'll try to follow up after I get
more experience with this setup. It seems drastic, but once set up it seems
to work.
