non-breaking hyphen

When I use a non-breaking hyphen (Ctrl+Shift+Hyphen) to ensure that two words
are kept together at the end of a line (eg co-defendant), spell check does
not recognise this as a word. Any tips on how to get the speller to recognise
the non-breaking hypen as a hypen?

You could add the word to the dictionary. Or you could format the word as
"no proofing."
