non opening Word Documents from the My Documents file

Can anyone tell me my my Word Documents will freeze up and not open? They appear to be opening but just lock up the whole computer. Everything else on the computer operates great.

Are you able to start Word? Does this occur on a single document or
all documents?

What version of Word are you using and what patches do you have
installed?
