non repeat headers and footers

In Word 2000 I have created a letterhead with customized header and footer,
but when a letter flows into a second page, the header and footer appear
there as well.

Word Help suggests dividing the document into sections, but the blak
letterhead document has no text body and hence cannot be divided into
sections a priori.

Help appreciated.

Thanks

Try the "Different first page" option in File-Page Setup, Layout tab. Then,
deliberately extend the letter to a second page and delete the second page
header and footer that you don't want. Once you have done this you can
delete the extraneous material, and the next time you use the document, the
header and footer will appear only on the "different first page."
