Non-sequential outline numbering - Anyone Knows?

Y

Yuri

I have to use a non-sequential numbering in a document.
For example, the numbering starts not with 1.0, but with

4.2.3 name...
4.2.3.1 name...
and so forth, as usual outlined numbering

then, next number, should be

6.2. name...
6.2.1. name...
and so forth, as usual outlined numbering

In short, I have to be able to restart numbering at any
level and at any number without distirbing any previous
numbering.

I already mastered a usual, sequential outline numbering,
but this task (with skipped numbers) is very challending. I
tried "Restart numbering" for "the rest of document" and
other tricks, but nothing works, numbering gets messed up.

can this be done in Word or I should forget about outline
numbering and do everything by hand?

Thank you,
Yuri

I would suggest that, unless the document has to be dynamic (numbering
updated automatically), you'd be much better off just typing in "hard"
numbers. When you are trying to replicate existing text (such as quoting
sections of legal code), you're better off not trying to use autonumbering.

The LISTNUM field was designed expressly for re-starting outline
numbering (simple numbering too).

Below, use { LISTNUM \l 1\s 6 }.{ LISTNUM \l 2 \s 2 } instead of the
style. It will give you 6.2 and the numbering will continue
accordingly.

You are right that the LISTNUM field can be very useful. However, if a
lot of restarts are required, using LISTNUM really won't be any easier
than typing numbers from the keyboard.
