normal.dot error in word 2003

B

Brendon

Every time I exit Word 2003 (and Outlook 2003)I get an
message saying

"The file normal.dot already exists. Do you want to
replace the existing file?"

I have done nothing that should change the global
template. Is this the effect of a virus? It is very
annoying.

Any suggestions.

ditto here...
I get the same message.

On top of that, Office 2003 is completely useless to me,
besides outlook, as I can't open any files with it. Even
those that I create with it.

Word will give an error such as "File xxx can't be
found", and Excel will give the error "Your virus scanner
has detected a problem with the file", even though the
scanner (norton) doesn't detect a problem with any of the
files.

Any help yet?

Do a search on your system, and rename all instances of normal.dot to normal.old.
Relaunch Word, and see if that fixes it.
Good luck.

I found out that my norton anti-virus was causing this
problem. The office 2003 products was working fine, then I
installed norton corporate edition and I started having
this problem, along with not being able open a document.
Once I removed the norton anti-virus software, everything
works fine.

Hi Zach and Brendon,

It sounds like you are encountering a bug in Norton AV and the "Office
Plug-in" option - it's a little too aggressive. In Norton Options go
to the Miscellaneous section, disable the "Office Plug-in" option, and
see if that resolves both issues.

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:

Hello, I am having this same exact problem. Everytime I close Word, I have an box pop up saying "The File Normal.dot already exists. Do you wish to replace the existing file?". I do not have Norton Antivirus installed. I started getting this problem with a pdf.dot file too (sorry i don't remember the exact name) This started occuring after i installed Photoshop CS. I have since uninstalled Photoshop, but the problems persist. Any info anyone can give would be appreciated
