normal.dot file and macros

S

Selwyn

I have used Microsoft WORD 2000 for many years and had no problem with
Macros. Now I installed WORD 2003 on a different computer and cannot find
the normal.dot file even with changing folder's settings to view hidden
files. There is nothing visible in templates under Microsoft unless I create
one, and normal.dot does not come up with an file explorer search.

I can create macros in normal.dot in the WORD process I normally used in
Word 2000, and they apply to all open files. However, when I closed word and
re-open, I have no working Macros.

Therefore, I need help on viewing the location of normal.dot and
understanding what has occurred. Everything has just been loaded, so it is
unlikely that normal.dot is corrupted. Consequently, it is a mystery to me
why the macros do not just stay even though they are created in normal.dot
per the creation of macros (Record a macro) window.

Please advise ASAP. Thanks.

I am not quite following. You have installed Word 2003 on a different
computer. Why would you think your old normal.dot would be accessible?

If you can not find the normal.dot on the different computer check to see if
you have hidden files visible. It should be there.

Are you creating new macros on the 2003 computer? If you accept the default
they should be in THAT computers normal.dot.

If you have not changed the default location (which it appears you have not)
enter or copy
%appdata%\Microsoft\Templates
to the address window of Windows Explorer or your browser and you will be
taken to the folder that contains the default template.
If there is no normal.dot file in that folder, Word will create one when it
is next opened. By default that file will be saved when you close Word,
provided you have made changes that reflect a change to the normal template
from its default settings.
It is recommended that you change the setting in tools > options > save >
prompt to save Normal Template to checked. You will be then prompted to save
the normal template when changes have been made.
