Not able to check in the project

H

Hari

Hi folks,
I opened a project from the PWA. Due to some problems while creating master
projects, the application crashed. From that day on, these projects still
show checked out to me.

I tried several options, Force check-in, Manage Queue, clear cache but now
of them worked. It still shows the project is checked out to me.

The only thing I/other PM's are left with is open this file as read only and
save as - so the information is lost.

Did anyone have similar problem or any solution for this?

Thanks in advance,
Hari

Hari,

I'm haveing the same problems, but have not been able to find an answer
either.

Here is my post to this forum from Monday:
I am using MS Project 2007 and Server 2007.
I have a project that was created, saved, and published.
I now cannot open a read/write version, just the read only version. I also
cannot delete the project.
When I try to use the force check-in tool from Project Web Access, it tells
me that the status is "waiting to be processed" eternally. Then, after a
couple of days, it tells me, "Cancelled" in the My Queued Jobs window.
Any suggestions on how I can delete or force check-in this project?

Hari,

I think I have found the solution. It seems the problem lies in the cache.

One thing I've noticed is that the local cache doesn't always clean up
nicely on the desktop. For example, I've tried to open a project in
read-write mode and the system tells me the plan is opened and i can only
open in read mode. When I look in PWA, it does not appear to be checked out
to anyone. If I clear the local cache and then re-open the plan, all is just
fine.
Take a look at the following:
1) log into project pro
2) click on TOOLS
3) Click on "Clean up local cache"
You may see the plan on the list. Remove it from the local cache and see if
that does the trick.

To fix mine, I went to the <Tools> menu, then to <Local Project Cache>,
<Cleanup Cache...>.

In the dialog box you will see a dropdown for Project Filter. The default
is "Projects not checked out to you."

I cleared all of these, and then switched the Project Filter to "Projects
checked out to you," and cleared all of those too.

Then I tried to open the project that was previously "checked out" to me,
and it opened in write/read just fine. When I closed it, it asked me if I
wanted to check it in, which I did, and it proceeded with the check in as
expected.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks SFDave.
I even tried clearing the cache. But it didnt work.
The only option it is giving is open as "Read Only" and "Save as..." which
is running me into several problems on resource management.

Can anyone help!

What happens in the queue when you attempt to force check in? Do the jobs
show up as waiting to be processed state? If so, then there are other jobs
in the thread that need to be cleared first.

Queue job types for specific objects (i.e. project) get processed in a queue
by threads. So if a job got stuck in "Processing" or "Getting enqueued"
state for a particular project, you will not be able to force check it in
until you clear out all the pending queue jobs. To find that job, you need
to go to Manage Queue in PWA>Server Settings and expand your filter to maybe
as far back as before the time your master plan crashed. See if you can
find jobs stuck in either "Processing" or "Getting Enqueued" or "Failed and
blocking"

For "Getting Enqueued" jobs you can enable the advanced option to "Cancel
jobs getting enqueued" and then cancel the job.

Hi Jonathan,
Yes they initially show "Waiting to be processed".
I did try several time to retry jobs or clear them from this list.
But they wouldnt clear off the queue.

Some of the Job status say: Failed But Not Blocking Correlation.
Even shows a view of error details- but couldnt copy as the window didnt
allow to do so.

Do you think the error details might help resolve the issue?

I think you need to make sure you don't have hanging jobs that are plugging
up your queue.

1) Go to PWA>Server Settings>Manage Queue
2) Under "Job History" select a "From:" date way in the past. Before the
date your master plan crashed
3) Change "Maximum number of jobs:" to 5000 by adding a 0. This will make
it easier to go through the list
4) Under "Job Types" keep all type except "Success", "Failed But Not
Blocking" and "Cancelled"

Hit the "Refresh Status" button. Sift through the jobs to find the queue
position 1 and tell me what you find as far as Project, Job Type, Job State,
etc.

Queue entry time: April 29th 2008- Morning
Project Name: A
Job Type:project Save from Project Professional
Job State: Getting Queued
% Complete: 0%
Queue Position: 1
Queue Type:project

Queue entry time: April 29th 2008 - Evening
Project Name: A
Job Type:project Checkin
Job State: Waiting to be processed
% Complete: 0%
Queue Position: 2
Queue Type:project

Ok, so you found the culprit for Project Name: A. You need to cancel the
job in queue position 1 that is in the state of "Getting Queued".

1) Expand the "Advanced Tab" and check the box "Cancel jobs getting
enqueued"
2) Also, you will probably want to cancel any subsequent jobs in the thread
so leave the second box checked "Cancel subsequent jobs in the correlation"
3) Once you have those two options checked, find the queue job in question,
select the checkbox next to is and click "Cancel Jobs".

This should clear up your queue for that particular project and allow you to
successfully force check it in through PWA>Server Settings>Force Check-in
Enterprise Objects"

If you still continue to see that the project is checked out, the
following will clear out any and all relic settings and cache that may
be causing issues:
Close project.
Go to C:\Documents and Settings\YOURCOMPNAMEORID\Application Data
\Microsoft\MS Project on your hard drive:
Delete all folders/directories in this location.
Launch project and connect (Be sure you don’t click the “enter user
credentials”).
Open the project.
