not enough memory to display the outline

I am building a multi-level requirements document in MS Word 2007 and two
problems are occuring. I think they are related. First, when I try to see
the doc in Outline view, I get an error message "Not enough memory or disk
space to display the Outline". Second, the document map is not working. I
cant use it to navigate the document.

That's a catchall error message when Windows/Word doesn't know what is
wrong. But it strongly suggests that the document is partially corrupt. Try
opening a copy of the document, choose SaveAs and select .xml format. Close
the document and then reopen it and SaveAs back as a .docx document again.
