Not enough memory

F

Frank

When I go to open a web folder with Frontpage 2002 I get a sporadic message
saying "Not enough memory to complete operation. Please close down other
programs and retry". The folder opens up with no problem and I have to
clear the error message. I have plenty of memory and I have shutdown all my
background programs but get the message 30% of the time when I open my web
folder. I tried a office repair with no success. Any ideas as to why this
is happening?

Check to see how much memory you actually have available. You may have some
programs running that have "memory leaks". Also might want to try and
deleting your temp files.

I think Frank has memory and hard drive space consfused. But I'm still
amazed that he has 350GB of hard drive space available. I opted for a
larger, faster hard drive in this computer and chose the 20GB. I did just
get a 40GB hard drive for Christmas that will be my slave drive. (I know,
not politically correct but I'm not a California resident so I can still
call it that.)

I am sorry I meant 350 MB of RAM and I have 40 GB of hard drive space left.
I notice that the problem only happens with one particular web folder which
has around 100 web pages in it. The other web folder which have 10-20 web
pages do not have a problem.
Personally I would not think this is a problem since I am not opening up all
the web pages just the folder the web page is in.

Close FrontPage, if open.
Find and delete all temp files
Find and delete all (hidden, system) files named *.web
If problem still exists, find and delete cmdui.prf. This will destroy any
toolbar/menu customizations you have made.

Tried everything you said and still have the problem. It seems to only
happen when I open up the very large web folders and not the smaller ones.
When I open up the folder I am watching the memory requirements and it only
changes by 10 MB or so not enough to create a problem.

There might be a hard-coded limit to the number of objects FP can "look at"
in a folder. "Out of memory" could be refering to the fact that you have
too much stuff in one folder.

How big exactly is "very large" web folders? At more that 1,000 of files or
so you are going to find FrontPage will perform poorly anyway....

Maybe you should try organizing a little better (into sub-folders and
sub-webs if necessary).

Also note, have you checked the server memory usage at the time you get the
error message? Maybe it's the server that's the problem.

As a followup I found that Norton Antivirus 2003 seems to be causing the
problem. When I deactivate Norton Anitivirus everything works fine.

Might also want to check your system resources. It is different from
available ram. Swap file size maybe? Although you obviously have plenty of
memory, system resources may me low. I'm not an expert in the Windows
platform but I do know the old DOS - non gui required certain statements to
have more than x number of files open at once. You may want to check the
newsgroup for your Windows version for the answer. There should be a reg
tweak somewhere you can set to allow all the files to be open if you want
them to be or at least point you in the right direction.
