Not opening older word files

I recently installed Word XP, and now i can't open any pre-existing word files from Windows 2000. I am getting the error message "Word cannot open this document template (C:\program files\...STARTUP\PALMAPP) even though this was not the file I tried opening. When I hit ok, i get the the file is not available. When I close the file i get "The file Normal already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?" I hit no, and get a Save as text box, and then am told that "Changes have been made that affect the global template, Normal. Do you want to save those changes?" I select No, and then it closes the program.

HELP!!!

PALMAPP.dot is an add-in for Palm Pilot. You probably don't need it,
especially if it's not working correctly. Move it out of the specified path
and then try again.
