"Not Read" appearing over and over for the same four emails

User X sent user Y four emails a long time ago, which user Y deleted
without reading.

Now, whenever user Y turns Outlook on and off user X keeps getting the
Not read message for the 4 emails.

I could probably find a circumvent around the annoyance for user X,
but I'm just wondering what could cause this.
