Not Responding errors

When I am using the custom animation on my slides, after ever selection the
program stalls, fades to a white screen, indicates it is not responding, then
resets and takes me back to where I was with the formatting that I requested
complete. I have exited the program, restarted my computer, to no avail - it
still does this little dance with every line I format. I've got 19 pages and
uncounted lines of text to format - can someone tell me why's it doing this
and how I can make it stop before I go out of my mind <grin>
