Not responding, uses too much rom, cant always send email replies,

Recently upgraded ram thinking it may help but to no avail......... still
getting not responding overlays since I brought this for my vista lap. Even
writing a response before trying to send takes a while. After about 8 or 9
letters........the program pauses and the blinking cursor disappears. Then
when I manage to complete a response, it stays in the out box and never gets
sent. Unbelieveable frustration since day one. Ram rating used to go to 100%
with 1 gb of ram but now its cool at 40 or 50 % with 2 gb..............still
the rom meter goes to 100 % when I even open the program. The program sychs
perfectly with my Garmin and all other functions are fine, but something isnt
right somewhere in this program ( or my computer ).....Is it the norton
software thats doing it ? Is a basic flaw with our friends at microsoft ?

You 'are' refering to Outlook?, though your mention of letters might mean
Word?
The version is?
You've run Office Update?
You've tried with Norton uninstalled - NB not disabled?

Thanks for the response......Im referring to Outlook 2007 on a Vista
lap.....Ive done every update that has been required and constantly look for
another that might solve the problem. Im sure Im not the only one. I ve
looked into the addon's that are mentioned in this thread and unchecked what
I thought was ok. I have not tried uninstalling norton or disabling it.

Are there any send/receive errors and/or messages? Are you connected to the
ISP that your mail is set up to use? Have you checked your Application Event
Viewer for any Office-related errors? Have you created a new profile (you say
you upgraded, I assume from Outlook 2003, if not please advise)? Did you scan
your PST file for errors? Or are you on a network connecting to an Exchange
server for mail?

Oh My...thanks.............There are no error messages, the screen just
lightens up with a - not responing on the header for the program. I did
upgrade from outlook 2003. Sorry dont know what a app event viewer is. I
didnt create a new profile when I upgraded to 2007...thats still the same. I
have never done anything with exchange because I never needed to or been "on"
( linked ? ) with exchange. Dont know how to look at the pst file ( I dont
even know what it is !! ) When the program is open, and it doesnt fill the
screen ( it fills half the screen ) and the sidebar gadgets are on the right
of the program screen...I see the ram and rom meters. The rom meter, most
times, pins to almost 100 % when Im in 2007, either responing to an email or
even tring to open an email. It just seems like the program is "grabbing" or
needs too much rom.............Does any of this make sense ?....Or am I just
too much of a novice.............Thanks Rick

And yes.........Im connected to the isp ( cablevision of NY ) when all this
is happening......Its a high speed wired connection

Hi Rick, you are not alone. But I've found a few work arounds.

1) When it seems that it's locked, it's not really (usually). Its that
something down deep with access to the servers is running, and hasn't
finished. If you leave the computer alone, it often comes back (not helpfull,
I know, but it shows that the program isn't dead).

2) If you click on the outlook icon down on the lower left (taskbar icon?),
you can select "cancel Server Request" and sometimes that unlocks the
program. But not always.

While I'm no MVP, and I'm not a Microsoft expert (although I'm learning more
than I ever wanted to, or should be expected to as a simple customer), it
seems to me that the program isn't ready for prime time. The network requests
that Outlook issues seem to have a very high priority, and even when it's
waiting for a reply, and the CPU is basically idle, it's locked out a) the
outlook display and b) other network access. I get lots of web time-outs when
outlook is in this state.

here's another suggestion. Turn off "send immidiatly", make the auto check
and send something over 30 min, and if you really need something to happen
fast, click on the "send-recieve" button.

I have what sounds to be a very similar problem with Vista SP1 and Outlook
2007. For no discernable reason, when Outlook attempts to communicate with
the Exchange Server to resolve a user name, to add a calendar event, to add a
contact, or to send mail, it will become non-responsive. From time-to-time
the application will become responsive of its own accord after some minutes.
Also, from time-to-time, it will become responsive when I click "cancel
server request."

I'm connecting to an Exchange 2007 Server over the internet. My machine has
no active antivirus on it (but is scanned daily as an inactive volume). I
have reviewed the Application Events and found nothing enlightening. Each
time the application is ended via the task manager it shows up as having
terminated normally.

Any suggestions?
