Not supposed to FTP

I switched web servers and the new one has slow tech support. They also say
it can take 96 hours for the site to flip over to them. They provided an ftp
address, which I tried to publish to... then, buried in their FAQ, I found
where it says you can break your site if you try to use FTP when you have
FrontPage. If it's not publishing, is it because my 96 hours isn't up yet, or
is it broken because I tried to FTP? Also, how do I delete the FTP address
from my "publish destination" list?

Front Page publishing using the "http" method requires
the server to have working Front Page Extensions. Your
host is correct that using FTP to publish will almost
always break the Front Page Extensions requiring them to
be reinstalled.

"New server has slow tech support and can take 96 hours
for the site to flip over to them": why is it you
switched hosts? This is NOT a good host. You might want
to provide their name here so others don't fall into
their trap.

you will need to go to wherever you registered your domain name and change
your DNS settings to whatever the new host requires for the 96 hours to even
begin.

If you'd like a great host check out http://arendkay.net I know the guy to
be 100% stand-up.

Thank you for your replies. I switched because I was using a freebie and I
needed to go ad-free. I used the host that has been my DNS server for 2 years
with no problems. Often, one does not know until one signs on, that support
will be inadequate. I did change the settings from old host to new, and I did
go back in and enable FP extensions after attempting to publish via FTP.
Given those two facts, do you think it is broken or not? I suyppose I will
know for sure tonight, at the end of 96 hours... so, if it is, what steps
then?

If it's broken you should have the host remove and recreate the web for you.
It's "the bomb" as far as how to get out of the tight spot.

There are a number of ways to do it other than the one above, but there's no
way that the above suggestion "can't" work.

I understand you are trying to help. Allow me to re-phrase my questions.
1) Have you ever experienced a situation where it is still broken even after
FP extensions have been re-installed?
2)How can I remove the FTP address from my "publish destination" list, so as
to save myself a click when publishing?

No. I've never had it that way, but that doesn't mean it can't happen.
It's unlikely though.

Just change the destination to the http:// address and frontpage will
remember that for the next time you publish.

P.S. It's Namesecure. I believe I will avail myself of their 30day money back
guarantee, but I am girding for a battle based on their responses so far.
Another thing they are doing is they offer extra services with more expensive
packages, like Miva shopping cart, Urchin, Addweb - but they're really just
30-day trials and then you have to buy them separately. They did respond to
me on that one, and their explanation is that the programs will exist on my
computer, so that's why I paid extra. The Arendkay one - is it for non-techie
types? I am a seamstress, not a webmaster. I'd have stuck with Geocities,
but when I was using them for free there was no tech support at all, not even
an autoresponse to emails. So based on that, I did not stay with them when it
came time to take my site to the next level.

Please see my friend at www.arendkay.net also get a windows server account.
I've found that, on the whole, FrontPage behaves nicer in that environment.

His name is Eugene and he's totally cool. feel free to tell him I
recommended him to you. We have no financial relationship so my
recommendation is unbiased (other than the bias I've got because of the top
notch service I get from him).

Eugene is on MSN messenger all the time and he actually answers his email
within minutes.

I also can host a site for you and you wouldn't need to know a single thing:
http://nedp.net/hosting but Eugene is cheaper. ;-)

Thanks Chris! I asked a dumb question and he responded right away, just as
fast as you do. I feel confident he will have my site back on the air today.
