If I understood properly, your issue is: the document created in Notebook
Layout view in Word 2004 for Mac does not display properly in Word 2003.
Additionally, the Word 2003 document also displays improperly in Word 2004
for Mac.
Is that correct?
Based on your description, I have also done some tests, but failed to
reproduce the same issue. I have created a new document in Word 2004 for
Mac, typed some characters, hit the Tab key for several times, and opened
it in Word 2003. Everything displays just fine.
From the test results, I don't think there has some compatibility issues
between Office 2004 for Mac and Office 2003. Would you please try the
suggestions below to narrow down this issue?
* Suggestion 1: keep both products updated

updated, he fewer problems.

2004 for Mac.
If it works fine with Word 2003 /a switch, please consider the following
methods to fix this issue:

1. Take some screenshots on the exact scenario on both Windows and OS X,
and send them to me.

a. When the document is opened in Word 2003, press PrScrn key on your
keyboard.
b. Type "mspaint" (without the quotation marks) in Start>Run box and click
OK.
c. Click Edit>Paste to paste the screenshot.
d. Save it as JPEG file type and send it as Email attachment.

a. When the document is opened in Word 2004 for Mac, press Command + Shift
+ 3, and the screen picture are then saved on your desktop with the
filename Picture 1, Picture 2, etc. Alternatively, you can press
Command+Shift+4, and the mouse cursor will become a cross and you can drag
the mouse to include a rectangular range. The range will be saved as a
picture file (in PDF format) on the desktop.
b. Open the latest picture to make sure it is the one you just created and
send it to me.
