notebook layout view often causes Word to crash

I'm consistently experiencing crashes of Word while I'm in notebook layout
view of various files I've created.

can't seem to find the reason why.

have installed upates

have copied/pasted text into a new file

still, notebook layout view is often crashing unexpectedly
