Notes error - function cannot be performed

When I edit existing notes and attempt to close them, I
sometimes get two error messages:

1. The function cannot be performed because the message
has been changed. (of course it's been changed!) I click
OK, then get:

2. The note will close and your changes will not be
saved. So I have to click Cancel, then copy and paste my
edits into a new note.

What do these messages really mean?
