Number Formatting

Hi Brian:

There are different schools of thought on this -- my usual
working method is to have each of the Heading styles based
on Normal.

Start with a fresh document. Set up the Heading styles so
they have the font and line spacing attributes you want,
but no numbering yet. Save and close.

In a separate document, just go in and Reset all the
thumbnails: Format / Bullets and Numbering / Outline
Numbered
One by one, click on a thumbnail and Reset (unless that
button is grayed out). Click "Yes" to the prompts. Then
close out of that screen.

You now have the preliminaries out of the way. Go back to
your actual document, put in a Heading 1 paragraph, then
with cursor in it:
Format / Style / Modify
Format / Numbering / choose lower-tier outline numbered,
the 3rd from left / Customize
With Level "1" showing in the upper-left, here's the key
step: Change Number style to (none)
and blank out Number format.

Lower down, set it to
Follow number with: Nothing
Choose your indents (probably 0" and 0" for this level).
Also type Scheme 3 into ListNum field list name:

Your other levels are pretty straightforward: change the
numbering, set the indents.

When done, OK OK Close -- and your scheme should be set
up, except you may have "Jason tabs" which are
unwanted .25" tabs in one or more levels -- separately
modify them out of those levels.

Any further fine-tuning of the numbering or left indents
of any level must be done by modifying Heading 1, and
choosing the individual levels on the screen
"Customize Outline Numbered List."
