number of records change when sorting

i have a table with employee names and their respective employee number.
when i sort by employee number, i have 918 records, however, if i sort by
last name, i only get 914 records. the records that are missing are the
latest ones that were entered and if i enter more, they also do not appear
when sorted by last name, but appear when sorted by employee number. there
are no special filters or anything in this database and it's always worked in
the past. help!!! :(

Hi Goldi -- One of the wonderful things about Access is that something so
little, can be such a big problem. And of course, Access doesn't have a
"Spell Check" type of thing to let you know hey this may not be what you
really want. Anyway, here's a couple things to look at. I understand you're
doing this sort in a Table right? I mean I understand you're sorting ON the
table, but are you actually sorting WITHIN the table? 'Cause I think that's
impossible if you're sorting WITHIN the table. Either the data is there or
it's not. If you find that yes you actually double clicked the TABLE and did
these sorts and got the varying results, you may want to compact and repair
your database. And try again. If you're doing this from a Query, you may
want to try doing it in the table and verifying what the number should be.
If you get the results you want in the Table, you may want to look at how
your Query is being set up. Also check to see if you have null records in
the fields you're sorting on. Access does funny things at times with Null
records. Let me know what you find, and perhaps we can delve deeper into the
issue. Good Luck.

oh micah - you're wonderful!!! yes, i was opening the actual table and when
i sorted within that table, i lost those records. however, i did the compact
and repair option and all of my records appear - no matter how i sort!!!
thank you, thank you, thank you!!! :)
