numbered heading resets to 1 after save

I am using Word 97 SR-2 & use styles/Headers to establish
outline numbering, based on Shauna Kelly's website
(lifesaver- thanks!!).

I have the styles saved in a template which I import into
new documents using the Organizer. These techniques have
worked like a charm on numerous documents, but I have 2
which are finicky & behave as follows:

I only have one section, section 6, which contains sub-
headers (6.1-6.5). The subheaders all use Header 2.

The problem is this: when I save the document, 6.4 & 6.5
revert to 1.4 & 1.5. If I re-apply the Header 2 style, or
even decrease the indent, the increase it back, the
numbers fix themselves.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Melissa

Here are two things to try.

First, make sure that you have *not* ticked the box at Tools > Templates and Add-ins > Automatically Update Document Styles. If this
box is ticked, every time you open the document, Word will re-apply the styles in the document.

Second, when you say you're using style Header 2, do I assume that this is style Heading 2? Go to a paragraph in style Heading 1.
Format > Styles > Modify > Format > Numbering > Outline Numbered. Click on the panel that's highlighted (probably in blue). Click
Customize. In the Preview panel, are all the correct styles attached to this list template? If not, you'll need to fix it up and
then save your document.

Hope this helps.
