Numbered lists with different characteristics in same file?

Among the difficulties of Word numbering, the most hard-core might be that
there is only one hierarchy of List Number styles. I need several types of
numbering in the same document. For example, in one kind I'd like to make the
top List Number style appear in the TOC, but not in other lists. It's
possible to start another hierarchy down at List Number 5, say, but this
invites trouble in the future, such as when the document is passed to someone
else. Is there any other way to have list hierarchies with different
behaviors?

You can have any number of different multilevel lists provided they are
linked to different styles. You can certainly start with the built-in List
Number styles, but you can also apply numbering to any other built-in or
user-defined style(s). Whether the style at any given level appears in the
TOC or not depends on whether the paragraph itself is formatted as Body Text
or given a "heading" outline level (Level 1, Level 2, etc.).
