Numbering equations - How?

H

Hong

Hi,

Is there anyway to automatically number the equation objects in Word (like
caption) such that the numbering is in brackets and aligned on the right,
while the equation objects at the centre. E.g.

....
Equation 1 (1)
....
Equation 2 (2)
....

Equation 1 and 2 are the objects and are aligned at the centre, while (1)
and (2) are their numbering (automated) aligned on the right. Is it
possible to add Chapter number to them?

Chapter 1
....
Equation 1 (1.1)
....
Chapter 2
....
Equation 2 (2.1)
....

And, is there anyway to cross reference to the numbers.

Thanks.

Insert | Caption gives you many of these options but (a) it does not allow
you to omit a caption label and (b) you have to put the caption in a
separate cell of a two-row table; otherwise, cross-references to the caption
(which would be in the same paragraph) will bring along the whole equation.
I am told that MathType (www.dessci.com) makes it easy to create the type of
equation numbering you want.

Suzanne is correct. MathType does allow you to number equations
in exactly the way Hong is wanting to do. It also allows you
complete control over the formatting of the numbers, for example
all of these formats are possible:

1
Equation 1
(1-1.1)
[Eqn 1,1]
etc.

MathType also allows you to insert into your document references
to these equation numbers. If you add an equation in the middle
of the document, all numbering after the inserted equation
automatically updates. It doesn't automatically update if you
remove an equation, but we install a toolbar icon to do this
easily.
