Numbering of comments

D

DA

I often use track changes feature in MS word and, while inserting and
deleting, also use "insert comment" to make notes to others as to why
I have added or deleted something. I then send the marked up file to
others.

Recently, as othese other folks were discussing my comments, I noticed
that they said things like "regarding comment 17". I could see no
such numbering of my comments but both the other parties, on two
different networks, said they could. Naturally, it would be easier to
locate whihc comment they are referring to if I could see those same
numbers on my comments.

Can anyone explain what I need to do so I can see the comment numbers,
too?

I think they both said they saw the comment numbering on their
computer monitor, not just on a hard copy printout, but am not 100%
sure of that.

Thanks much!

Which version of Word? In Word 2007, you should see the comment number after
the user initials in each comment balloon.

On the other hand, if you are using the Reviewing pane, no numbers are
shown.

I am using Word 2003, actually 2002 SP3, but I think they are 99.99%
the same; I suppose it could be possible that this is one of the
differences between my 2002 SP3 and 2003. One of the other parties
who sees the comment numbers is using Word 2003.

I do not see comment numbers in either the balloons or the reviewing
pane.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Nothing shows in the bubble, just "Comment:" and then the actual
comment. In the reviewing pane at the bottom (if i choose to show
it), each item, comment ,deletion, insertion, is preceded by a pink
colored bar that has my full name in the middle and the date at the
right and, at the left, will say either Comment, or Insertion, or
Deletion.

But no numbers anywhere.

Thanks

Well, have I never used Word 2002, so this might be a peculiarity of that
version. Sorry, I don't know what to suggest here... :-(

Word 2002 introduced the so-called balloons, which were a big change.
Apparently some smaller changes (such as initials and comment numbers) were
changed back in Word 2003.

That sounds like the most plausible explanation. I guess there is no
service pack beyond SP3 for Word 2002 that might fix it back. Thanks
Stefan.

Does anyone else out there still use Word 2002? If so, can you
confirm that you have the same problem as I have?

Perhaps, I should use my Office 2007 software for Word, too.
Currently, I use it for Outlook, but not for EXCEL (or Word) due to
the upgrade problems from 2003 to 2007 for EXCEL templates that have
add-in functions. I imagine that there are no real problems upgrading
WORD files from 2002 (or 2003) to 2007. Right?

Thanks again
Dean

Umm, it -can- open them but needs an add-in to do so. By
default 2007 will not open 2003 and earlier versions. So if it
fails to open them, do a search for the converters to install.

You have it backwards, the "converters" are for the prior versions of
Office to handle 2007 file. 2007 handles the early stuff without
additional requirements.

Indeed. If Word 2007 couldn't open older files, that would be a serious
limitation.
