Numbering pages on odd and even pages differently

I am self-publishing a book and need the even numbered pages to be numbered
on the left and odd numbered pages on the right. I am currently doing it
manually. Is there a way to set it up to automatically do it?

I assume you are printing on both sides. Are you using alternate
margins? If so (at least in Word 2000) bring up headers & footers and
place your page number where you want it.

If you use Insert | Page Numbers, there is an option to place numbers on the
Outside, which is what you want. For a book, though, you need more control
over headers and footers. For this you need to enable "Different odd and
even" on the Layout tab of Page Setup. This will give you a separate Even
Page Header/Footer and Odd Page Header/Footer in which you can put different
running heads and place the page numbers differently.
