Numbers alignment in two docs of diff. languages

I often work with two documents open at the same time, one in English,
the other being its translation into French.

I am struggling with the problem of numbers alignment. If I choose
French in International settings, the numbers of the English document
get screwed up and vice-versa.

Is there a way (as there was in Word Perfect for Dos) to avoid this
dilemna by specifying alignment criterias specifically for a given
document? And if not, is there a work around this?
