Numbers changed to dates in cells

Hello,

When I input something like 12-4 into a cell it converts
it to December 4.

How do I format the cells so they will leave my entries
as is without converting them to dates or anything else?

Jeff,

Format the cells as "Text" beforehand
Format/Cells "Number" Tab, select "Text"
or
place an apostrophy before entering the number
'12-4

Highlight the cells or the column, right-click, format
cells, number, and choose text.
