Numerous tasks processing

I'm having sudden problems with Outlook 2007. Virus protection
suspended, I'm having accounts frozen in "processing." I've noticed at
times "0 or 161 tasks completed successfully" and I'll see accounts
listed. This happened out of the blue and outgoing mail does not seem
to work either.

OUtlook also seems to not quit entirely. I have to open the task
manager and force quit and restart.
