Hi

My customer has recently moved from Word 2002 to Word 2007.
They have discovered that the pages numbering is incorrect in this
"new" version.

In a 4 page document, we have Page x of y in all page headers, where x is
actual page number and y is the total amount of pages in the document
(NumPages).
When the document is opened, first pages says Page 1 of 1, second page says
Page 2 of 4, third page says Page 3 of 4 and so on.

This was not the fact in Word 2002, for which there was a fix made by
Microsoft.

How come there is no fix for Word 2007?

P.S. Addin code fixes or likewise for this issue is not of interest.

Thanks in advance for any info about a Microsoft fix.

Hi Stefan

I have read this information and a lot of others earlier, but I'm interested
in if and when Microsoft are going to fix this error.

Also, the MVP-tips does not fully work when documents are sent from a
Webb-service using a PDF-rendering tool on a server.
There are no user behind the keyboard and no interface to intrecept with the
rendering actions.

Thanks anyway for your reply.

Best Regards

Hi macropod

Are you saying that you have SP1 update installed and don't get the NumPages
error if you use the field NumPages in the documents header or footer?

Hi Peter,

I have SP1 installed an am unable to replicate your problem. I'm not saying that installing SP1 is the solution, but having the
latest updates installed certainly fixes a variety of problems in the initial release. It also gives those trying to help you a
greater chance of replicating the problem.

As an aside, have you tried repairing the Word installation (Word Options|Resources|Run MS Diagnostics)? Also, does the problem
affect new documents, or only documents created in a previous Word version? When you press Alt-F9 to toggle the field code display,
do *all* the headers/footers show 'Page {PAGE} of {NUMPAGES}', or something equivalent?

Hi macropod

Maybe this is page header/footer related.
To recreate the error, follow the steps below:

1. Create a new Word 2007 document
2. Insert a page header with the values Page "pages" of "numpages" fields,
like Page 1 of 4.
3. Add 3 pagebreaks
4. Save the document in Office 2003-format (.doc)

When you open the document, the first page says Page 1 of 3. The other pages
says page 2 of 4, 3 of 4 and so on.
If you open Printpreview, first page says Pags 1 of 2 until you click the
document.
Then it corrects itself to Page 1 of 4.

Is the behaviour different in your environment?

Hi Peter,

Yes, I can reproduce that, but I also find the 'problem' corrects itself as soon as I scroll down the page then return to the top of
the page - using either Word 2000 or 2007 (I don't have the versions in-between). No need for a print preview.

This isn't the classic 'Page X of Y' bug referred to in your original post. That bug affected printed output - this one only affects
the initial display of the first page of a doc saved by Word 2007 in Word 97-2003 format.
