O2003 Header Status Icons - Meaning

S

srm

I'm using O2003, IMAP. In the Header status column there is either...

1. no icon
2. an icon that looks like a piece of paper (or email) with the top
right cut out
3. an icon that looks like a piece of paper (or email) with the top
right cut out but with a red "x" on the icon
4. an icon that looks like a piece of paper (or email) with the top
right cut out but with a blue down arrow on the icon

I looked at these sites but cannot locate the above note icons in the
list.

http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/icons.htm
http://outlook-tips.net/howto/icons.htm
http://www.freeemailtutorials.com/m...mingMailOutlook2003/outlook2003EmailIcons.cwd

Does anyone know where I can find a meaning of these icons? I know
they have to deal with the message status, but just not sure when and
why they appear and/or change.

Thank you.

See the very bottom of http://outlook-tips.net/howto/icons_mail.htm for 2 of
the icons.
2 is header only, 4 is Marked for download. I'm not sure why you have some
without an icon - I think the one with the x is marked for deletion.

After loading an IMAP acct - the one without an icon is a fully downloaded
message. The little white paper icons indicate you downloaded the header
only and the different icons indicate how they are marked - arrow is marked
for download, x is marked for deletion. Once the message is fully
downloaded, these icons disappear.

I'll update the mail icon page with the x icon.

Diane:

Is there a location (link) that tells me how IMAP works in O2003 and
when these icons might appear. For example, I have all my folders set
to download headers only. However, Outlook is downloading everything
(header, body and attachments). I'm guessing this is due to our GB
connection and Outlook is ignoring that setting. If however, I review
the mail on my hand held device, delete it, and then remove it from
the trash, when I run O2003 I then get the icons that looks like a
piece of paper (or email) with the top right cut out but with a red
"x" on the icon. This is in the Trash folder but in the inbox no icon
is displayed.

My IMAP is configured so my hand held device and Outlook use the same
folders for mail.

I'm just trying to understand how IMAP works in O2003 as it seems
settings are being ignored.

Thanks.

One other person reported this as well.

Outlook neither knows nor cares how you are connected to the network.

I'm speculating, but I'd say if you purge the message from another client, the
IMAP server informs Outlook of this and Outlook changes the icon to indicate
the message is no longer on the server. To Outlook, the "trash" folder has no
special meaning. It's just another folder.
My IMAP is configured so my hand held device and Outlook use the same
folders for mail.

If you use IMAP on both clients, you don't have a choice. Both will always
show the same folders, since the folders are hosted on the server.

Brian:

Thanks for the email. I apologize, but I didn't see any answers to my
questions about the headers only being downloaded. You noted one other
person noted this, that Outlook does not recognize the network
connection, and that Outlook is not ignoring the settings. I
appreciate the feedback, but why is it that I have downloaded headers
only checked and the entire email is being downloaded? That is why I
thought it might of been due to the connection, Outlook ignoring the
setting, or maybe a bug.

It may be a bug and that's why I mentioned that someone else reported the
issue. I suppose you can say that Outlook may be ignoring the setting, but
that classifies it as a bug in my mind. That's not to say there's not a
reason, but I, like you, would expect that Outlook would download only the
headers when the send/receive group had that setting.
