Object Library not Registered

W

William Finn

I just upgraded to OS 10.3.4.

I installed office and tried to open one of the projects (Excel) I'm working on,
and got the error "Object Library not Registered". It wouldn't open the file.

I am unable to do anything with VBA. If I make a new file I can't record
macros, if I open the VBA editor, I can't actually do anything in it (everything
is grey), etc.

After installing the 10.1.2, 10.1.4, and 10.1.5 updates I opened my project
and it worked fine. As soon as I rebooted my computer however, VBA
stopped working again!

So I just tested something. I deleted everything in:
myAccount/Library/Preferences/Microsoft

And I was able to open my project. I did it a couple times. I guess I have to
try and figure out exactly what preference is choking it?

Is this a known bug with Office on Panther?

It's not a known bug, but this can happen when permissions aren't set
correctly, or if the Carbon Registration Database is corrupted, at
least. Given your results, probably the latter, but you should take a
look at the general troubleshooting strategy at

http://www.mcgimpsey.com/macoffice/office/troubleshooting.html

for more possibilities.

I figured out it was the CRD. But, Excel was producing a bad one
every time. Each time I ran Excel I would first have to delete that
file to get it to work.

So I tried repairing permissions, but now Excel crashes if I try to do
anything with VBA (use the editor, run a macro, etc.)

I'm going to delete the Office folder and try to reinstall Office from
scratch since I can't even be sure the updates were installed
correctly. I'll then try the stuff on your site 1 by 1. I'll post
the results tonight.

DON'T just delete Office folder. There's a lot more to it than that. Use the
Office Remover program to delete Office completely (excepting your data,
which is left untouched). Since you're in Office X, you get the Office
Remover from the Office v. X CD Value Pack. Install it and run it. Empty the
trash. Then reinstall Office X and all the updates 10.1.2, 10.1.4, 10.1.5.

Yea, I know, but I dont know where my box is, its probobly still in
storage. I hunted most of the other files down including the prefs
and stuff and deleted them.

But anyways, its working now. I took a minute to think about anything
that could even possibly affect Excel not being able to read the prefs
properly... and turned off FileVault.

If it didnt take 20 minutes to turn it on, and 20 more minutes to turn
it off, I'd test it to see if it is really what is causing the
problem.

Any thoughts? Anybody else using FileVault with 10.3.4 and Office
v.X?

FileVault is designed not to let anyone write to anything in your user
folder except you, logged in. But it appears to have some strange kinks: I
have discovered that AppleScripts stored anywhere in the user folder, for
example in the Entourage Script Menu Items folder, cannot save (write)
properties when closing. So, whether intentionally or otherwise, there's
something which prevents certain types of files being rewritten even when
it's by you and you are logged in. It could be that AppleScript and the
"OLE" level of Word look to FileVault as if they're coming from "outside".
