I have an object in PPT which takes up most of the page, and it shows fine in
Print Preview, however when I print only a frame with small x prints.

Can you check the original JPG -- see if it's set up as a CMYK JPG. If so,
change it to RGB.

If it's an extremely large JPG, see if saving it as a smaller file size
helps. For example, make it 750 pixels tall (assuming you want it about as
tall as the slide) and whatever wide is appropriate for that height.

Also, how did you insert the JPG into PPT?

Yes it is PPT 2003 and the object is a JPEG scan of a document.

The JPG is black and white - just a scan of a black and white document and in
the PPT slide the document is approx 645 KB. I just copied the object and
pasted it into PPT. The TIFF of the same thing acts the same way. I never
had this problem before, but now with Acrobat 7 Pro, something seems
different.

Okay, you've got a couple of problems.

One is that 645kb for a JPG is very large. I happen to have a JPG here
that's 675KB when I look at its details in Windows Explorer. When opened in
Photoshop, I see that the thing is actually 9MB! It's about 2000 pixels X
1500 pixels, and I saved it at about a level 6 quality compression. Try
resampling the photo to around 750 pixels tall (since you said the image
about fills the slide) by whatever wide and see if that helps.

Also, don't copy/paste the image into PPT. That creates a lot of overhead in
your file because it allows you to double-click the image in PPT to open the
image editor and edit it from within your PPT window. But that convenience
often comes at a very high price when it comes to things like file size and,
possibly, printing. I would open the image in an image editor, save it, and
then use Insert|Picture|From File to get it into PPT.

To summarize, I think you can fix your problem by opening the image in an
image editor, resizing it to 750 pixels (ish) tall, saving it, and inserting
it into PPT using Insert|Picture|From File.
